Biography

My current works explore the use of enhanced texture in bold semi abstractions. Gouache is my preferred medium for its vibrancy.

Topics range from domestic interiors/still lives to semi abstract landscapes inspired by walking and exploring in Derbyshire which holds myriad memories as well as fresh discoveries. Since 2017 I have been enjoying the varied landscapes of the Isle of Man and attempting to capture its changing moods with dramatic changes in weather and sea using more figurative depictions.

Past works have included a series on the Northern Line by day and night using bold brush marks to convey the visual shock of trains hurtling past overground, and a series echoing the Portuguese 'saudade' tradition of nostalgic longing for lost places and people. These paintings often carry the emotional charge of childhood memories.

My work has been exhibited  in galleries, shows and festivals in London, Derbyshire, Hertfordshire, Norfolk and the Isle of Man including The Barnet Open at the artsdepot (2007 and 2012) and the Medical Art Society's annual exhibitions at The Royal Society of Medicine (from 2011 to 2018) and with the North London Artists Network at the Camden Image Gallery (2014) and The Strand Gallery (2015). My painting of Dovedale was selected for the Derbyshire Open Exhibition at the Buxton Gallery in 2015. During 2016 I was a guest artist at the Dovedale Arts Festival. a popular weekend celebration of art, music and literature. My work has also been selecetd for exhibition in the Green Man Gallery in Buxton regularly since 2018. Over the summer of 2019 'Storm over Tissington Trail' was exhibited as part of the Derbyshire Open Art Exhibition.

I established the Avondale Gallery in North London in 2013 as a venue to make fine art more accessible in a relaxed environment. The gallery was a showcase for my own work and a venue to hold joint and solo exhibitions with selected artists. Over 5 years we ran ten successful exhibitions as part of Front Room Art, including several which raised substantial sums for charities such as Medicins Sans Frontieres. During June 2017 Front Room Art co- organised a local midsummer street festival including  an exhibition of my flower and garden paintings to raise funds for our local hospice.

Current work and exhibitions: I now oscillate between living and painting in Derbyshire and the Isle of Man. I am a member of the Peak District Artisans and have exhibited with them including at their annual Great Dome art fair in Buxton (2022 and 23). I'm also a member of the Isle of Man Creative Network and have exhibited with them most recently in their Island Arts Festival (2023)
